Why I Love Watching CultRepo's Tech Documentaries
Whenever I want a break from coding, I love watching CultRepo's documentaries on the origin stories behind Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, and Python.
I have worked with frameworks like Ruby on Rails, Django, Spring, and GraphQL for years, so I always find it fascinating to hear the backstory of how they were actually created and the arguments that shaped them.
CultRepo (formerly Honeypot) makes full-length documentaries on YouTube interviewing the original creators of our favorite languages and frameworks.
My Favorites So Far
- Ruby on Rails: The Documentary — Since I have spent years running and migrating production Rails apps, watching DHH, Tobias Lütke, and Jason Fried talk through the early Basecamp and Shopify days was a blast.
- GraphQL: The Documentary — Tells the story of Facebook’s 2012 mobile crunch and how Lee Byron, Nick Schrock, and Dan Schafer ended up rethinking APIs from scratch.
- Python: The Documentary — Follows how Guido van Rossum’s side project grew into the language powering almost all of modern AI and data science.
